What are Family Constellations?

Family Constellations is a Systemic Therapeutical Method, focusing on the liaisons of our unconscious self with our family members and stories.
We are all part of a family and - even if we are not aware of this - we are all connected in a way that behavioral patterns and certain events of the life of our family members, will remain alive in us (and in the subconscious of our family system, throughout many generations) until we can solve them.

The main goal of this amazing therapy is to solve issues that are psychologically, emotionally and physically conflicting and that need to be seen and redefined based on love and acceptance.

Family Constellations are extremely useful for any emotional, behavioral, mental blockage you might feel in you or related to any relationship and context of your life.

Let's break this apart... shall we?

Why "Family"?

This does not mean that you have to bring your family to these sessions. This does not mean that you have to tell your family you are exploring this method. This does not mean you will only bring topics that are related to your family and the relationships with your family.

"Family" stands for the fact that we are all part of a family and that our blockages in life are usually originated in our relationship with our family members, with the dynamics our families have and the stories of our families.

Why "Constellations"

This does not mean you will be looking at stars and their connections.

"Constellations" stands for the fact that through this method we look at the connections of stories. Many generations ago maybe something happened in your family that was so important that still needs to be integrated. When we do a Family Constellation sessions, we place certain topics and then we observe how they connect with each other, how they interact, how they affect each other. In life, everything connects, even if these connections come from far away.

Just like stars, whose connections shape and form a constellation.

What is a "System"?

This does not mean we are being shaped into robotic systems.

"System" stands for the fact that each family operates, behaves, in a certain way. Remember when, one day, you went to your friend's place and realized his/her family didn't behave the same way yours did? The word "system" is about these "dynamics" every family has. Yourself, as an individual, are a system. Your family is a system you are part of.

And then, all the other contexts you are part of, are also systems. Your work, your friendships, your relationships. They are all connected to your family, your family system.

How does it work?

More than a method, Family Constellations is a philosophy of life through which you work on yourself on a deep, loving, accepting and eye opening level.

Example of topics that can be looked at through this method:
- professional blockages;
- money issues;
- relationship issues;
- lack of strength, motivation in life;
- health problems;
- repeated patterns and issues;
- and so much more!

In an individual setting of a Family Constellations' session we use figurines, meditation and other systemic exercises that will guide you and your system.
This the perfect setting if you feel that your topic is something that your feel you should work on privately.

An individual session lasts up to 90min.

FAQs

Family Constellations

Ideally one session is enough for one topic but It always depends on the topic you bring and on your system & yourself.

For therapeutic reasons, more than one session may sometimes be necessary to resolve the issue you are rising and additional sessions may be suggested. Always based on your freedom to choose your therapeutic path, my desire is to guide you and your system with the best therapeutic journey. This path is individual and subjective, so it will always be respected and guided in this way.

After a session usually clients mention they feel lighter and unblocked. Deep emotions can also be more on the surface after a Family Constellations' session, which is just normal, since you've just experienced a process of consciousness about yourself and the topic you brought to the session. After a few days, usually these emotions tend to be lighter and comfortable. What arises and that end up not being comfortable, usually are requests for you to take action, to take care of yourself, to change your mindset. In case if you need an extra support, in these cases I suggest follow up mentorship sessions. It always depends on yourself, your own process and your system.

You feel unblocked and you feel the people around you also behaving differently. When you do a Family Constellations' session, you are working on yourself and also allowing your system to heal a wound/a blockage/a pattern. Hence, things and people around you, who are connected to the topic that your brought to the session, will also unconsciously feel different (if you wish to know a few stories about this, please contact me info@joanacostapessoa.com, so I can provide you with some examples).

In Family Constellations we work on the soul level.

This means we believe we chose our family, in order to (both): -work on patterns, wounds, blockages that already exist in this family; -work on ourselves, through these (sometimes) painful wounds. This might seem like a hard perspective at the first sight but believe me, when you start looking at the world through this lens, you can really understand and be at peace with many events. As well as to look at yourself and your family in a deeper, more compassionate way.

It might be a process but it places us in a place of love for life.

Because some things, some events, might not have been processed when they happened. Not processed means that maybe someone suffered with something in silence, for example. This example is very common and it brings many consequences to families. Until someone, like yourself, decides to look at it. In Family Constellations we intend to deliver these hard emotions to the person (and their soul) it belongs to and by doing this, we are liberating them, because we acknowledge their pain/their event. When we do this we also liberate ourselves from it and now we are free to live our lives in a lighter way.

An individual session happens in a 1:1 context and for the actual method, we use figurines (Lego), meditation and other systemic exercises. A group session happens in a group context where there is:

-1 facilitator (the person who will conduct the session); -group representatives (individuals who join the session in order to represent something/someone in someone else's family constellation); -issue holders (individuals who join the session in order to constellate, by bringing a topic they wish to work on). The main difference is definitely practical, as you can understand from my previous explanation, even though the aim of the constellation is the same.

Some people report the fact that doing an individual session, they feel more comfortable bringing certain topics to work on (due to fear of embarrassment) and also feel that can feel more certain feelings (since they are more connected to every figurine's movement). In a group session you have the amazing group effect, which can bring the possibility to learn something from others' life experiences. When you are a group representative, you also work indirectly on your own system, which is an amazing opportunity.
